Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
